The new Sun Flare feature in ON1 Photo RAW 2020 is near and dear to my heart. That’s because I created many of the looks that you have to choose from with this new Effects filter. In this video, I will show how I use the sun flare filter in my workflow to apply realistic or enhance sun light. All of the filters I show in this tutorial are included free when you install the factory version. Thanks for watching!

I like this filter! So far it has helped me add texture to otherwise washed out areas of the sky, especially when the blank space happens behind trees and buildings.
To me it seems that the ‘Fade’ slider in the Sunshine section washes out the image area affected by the sun flare. The top set of sliders change the look and feel of the flare itself and the lower Sunshine sliders change the look of the underlying image to better coordinate with the flare.
I haven’t found Fade useful for the Sun Star type so far, and I really haven’t played with the Bokeh option yet to assess what happens when it is combined with Fade.

Nice work and nice filter. Looks like your input is well appreciated at On1. One small comment about your sound track.
Did you know that the main part of your commentary is single channel sound (Left only), then the added on description toward the end is L+R Mono. Just FYI. Another small note for you, the menu bar from your Mac is irrelevant and probably doesn’t need to be there.
Very nice video.

When you reset a mask it goes back to original but how do you get it back to the image you are working on ? I have a use Ctrl Z [win] but there may be easier way ?

Excellent tutorial, Matt. Love your enthusiasm!
I used to do sun and star effects (and other things like Texture Effects) with Topaz software that I purchased. Over the past couple years, On1 Raw has added more and more capability that has obviated the need to use Topaz products as well as Photoshop. Which is why I stopped my Adobe subscription to use On1 Raw as my DAM and editor. (With Affinity Photo – a $40 one-time purchase – as my backup for the few things I used to go to Photoshop for like Liquefy and Inpainting.) As On1 Raw continues to improve, there is no looking back for me.

Great video. Now working on a Lake Michigan photo with the sun and this video will help me a great deal to refine it.

A lot better than the old filter.
Especially for sun stars it would be nice if the scale slider allows us to reduce the size of the sun – and not just increase it…
