Hi Dylan,
This comment is not directly concerned with your video but you may be able to help with my query about reduction of image sizes. My Z9 images are typically 8256×5504 pixels in size. I need to be able to reduce the image size to a maximum of 1600 pixels on the long edge or 1200 on the short edge for entry into my camera club PDI competitions. This necessarily means that I have to throw away large numbers of pixels. Can you give me some guidance on the best settings in AI resize to maintain sharpness and reduce artefacts? The judge in the camera club competion has commented on the weird patterns that are apparent in the reduced image.
Thank you,
Allan

Hey Allan! are you using resize to downsize the images? I would recommend using the Export function to modify the size if you are looking to downsize. In export – use the “Resize” pane and change Resize to… over to Long Edge or whatever you would need. This will downsize quickly and maintain image quality. Let me know if you still get any images that still have artifacts or look wonky.
Cheers,
Dylan

Thanks Dylan,
As with the subsequent reply from David Price, I need to be able to reduce the size of images for projection in a photography club competition.
I have searched the web and found the following YouTube video which seems to work.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRMedWjvBvY
In summary, this involves the following steps after the size has been adjusted.
In Settings, set Smoothness to 0 and use the faithful method.
In Sharpening set the method to Progressive with suggested values of Amount to 75, Detail to 75 and Threshold to 0. Adjust these values to taste.
Adjust Protect to taste in the preview. Suggested starting values are Shadows 24, Highlights 64 and Skin 0
When the image looks good in the preview choose jpg with best quality (100%).
Thank you for your interest,
Best Wishes,
Allan

Sorry Dylan,
I didn’t read your reply properly. Maybe one too many Californian reds? lol.
I use resize AI to reduce the size of images. I’ll try your suggestion of using the Export function and get back to you.
Thanks again for your help.
Best Wishes,
Allan

Hi Dylan
I have been using PR’s Resize to reduce images for years. In fact, that is almost all that I use it for.
When producing a PDI for a Club Comp, I need to shrink images down to 1400 by 1050 to fit the Club projector. Are you saying that I have to use the Export function?
Because the tools inside of Export are not as good as those that are in Resize AI.
The danger with the Long Side option in Export is that you end up with images that are correct on one dimension, but too large for the comp on the other dimension. Which results in a lot of wasted time and deleted files.
By the way, when using Resize AI to shrink images, I turn off sharpening, and I normally produce a TIFF, then I use Soft Dynamic Contrast to add a little sharpening, before applying the required border with the Borders Filter. After which I export the thumbnail image as a jpeg.

Hi Dylan, I would love to see one of your programs on how to use Resize feature of ON1 2024. A step by step approach to use it to increase or decrease an image and other tools that would make it easier to understand the workings of this tool. I wasn’t sure how to add this suggestion to your program requests so I’m using this comment section to add my request.
