What kills me about TT is that they don’t offer rear opening models which I prefer in an urban or really any environment. I’ve got my eye on a Backlight 26L and am always looking for a little something which would compel me to make the purchase.

To me this is more of a rolling bag and less backpack. I view it as a bombproof compact case on good wheels that can save my back in urban and long travel situations. The fact you can carry it backpack style makes it more versatile. Back accesss really wouldn’t do much good and would only reduce it’s ability to hold a lot of gear in a padded and secure way.
For a photo backpack carried on my back, I totally agree that I want quick and easy back access.

Understandable, and I would appreciate your insights on other backpacks as well. I’m looking for the all utility, travel backpack that would hold photo gear as opposed to a combination hike/photo) and would serve as a multipurpose solution. It would have to be configurable to hold a long wildlife lens for weekend trail work as well as be suitable for international travel carrying a laptop, photo gear, and be usable in an urban environment. I like the protection that a rear opening backpack offers even though it comes at the price of convenience. Right now, the Minshift Gear Backlight 26L is the lead contender unless you have some better ideas?

For this conversation, lets leave it at the Streetwalker being an incredible rolling bag to carry a lot of gear in smooth rolling situations with the ability to go on your back when needed. The 26L is a great backpack. I was just admiring a workshop student’s version of that bag last month. There’ve been a snicker or two around the studio about the name. Tis true. Fortunately once you toss the tags, it’s only printed on a tiny label many would need reading glasses to see. I just like how much stuff it can roll in its small form factor with ease and how little it stands out while doing it.

I have plenty of time and would like to drive from Michigan to Bandon Or for the workshop to see the area as well as attend the workshop. Can you give me any advise on the weather which roads to avoid and the general best route you would take? We do not usually have any snow in Michigan that time of year but I am not sure about the mountains out west. Should I carry chains for the trip? Thank you in advance.

It will be very weather dependent. Sometimes the southern passes are bad while I-84 through the Columbia Gorge is great. Sometimes the Gorge gets and ice storm while the southern passes are fine. I’m no expert on the Rocky Mountain passes.
I’d post this to the forums to see what others think and I’ll be happy to chime in later on as we see what weather develops this fall. You’ll have a blast with Scott. I’m teaching a Moab workshop in that time frame…
