Scott Davenport is a landscape photographer and photo educator based in San Diego, California. He leads photo workshops, writes ON1 photo books, and creates ON1 tutorial videos. He feels weird referring to himself in the 3rd person. He also can’t help getting his feet wet photographing at the beach. At the ON1 conference, Scott will be teaching Black & White Landscape Photography: Timeless Editing Techniques and Enhancing Sunrises and Sunsets in ON1 Photo RAW, sharing his expertise to help you elevate your landscape photography and editing skills.

How long have you been using ON1?
Scott: I’ve used ON1 products in my photography for at least 10 years. Maybe 12? Certainly in the double-digits.
Why do you love ON1 Photo RAW?
Scott: I appreciate that the ON1 tools run deep. What I mean by that – as you grow as a photographer and your processing skills improve, you can ‘unlock’ the next level of ON1’s power. Ready to move beyond 1-click looks? You have Effects. Ready to apply selective treatments and not just global adjustments? You have masking for Effects and Local Adjustments. Want to try your hand at multi-image manipulations? You’ve got Layers. As you grow, ON1 Photo RAW supports you.
What is your favorite feature(s)?
Scott: ON1 Effects, no doubt. There is an ON1 filter involved in almost every one of my images. If I had to pick three filters, give me Dynamic Contrast, Sunshine, and Color Adjustment. I use many others depending on the image, yet those three are my staples.
What’s your best tip for new photographers using ON1 Photo RAW?
Scott: Two things, I suppose. First, get to know Browse and learn how Cataloged Folders work. These make searching for images much easier. Second, start with presets. Apply one you like and then “walk” the preset. In the Edit module, look at what changes are made in Develop and what filters are applied in Effects. Toggle each filter off and on to learn how each adjusts your photo.
What’s always in your camera bag (besides the camera)?
Scott: Well… another camera? Always have a backup, right! Ok… the basics – extra memory cards and batteries. As a landscape photographer, reaching a location sometimes involves a healthy hike. I don’t want to be in the field and hit a problem with a memory card (yes, it’s happened to me) or have a battery die just when the light is right. An equipment failure that spoils a shoot makes that hike back to the car especially long.
What inspires your photography style?
Scott: I’m a landscape photographer and seek out the beauty of nature. I want my best photos to evoke a sense of wonder and respect for nature, and feel immersive, inviting you into the frame. I also love post processing, so I’m not at all against adjusting colors, improving textures, adding contrast, amplifying light… shaping an image to guide my viewer to the important parts of the scene. Yet I still want the image to look natural overall. Stunning, yet realistic. Believable. Mother Nature on a *really* good day.
Waht’s the best place to follow you?
Scott: All roads to me begin and end at my website. I’m most active on YouTube where you can find loads of free ON1 tutorials.
